Think-Pair-Share
Students are given a question that is asked by the teacher. They are given time to think silently, then are paired up to exchange ideas with their partner. After they discuss their ideas they share with the class.
An example of this would be giving the students time to write down what they're passionate about, then giving them time to pair up with a partner and find and discuss what they have in common, and then share it with the class.
